Blackjack

Blackjack was called Vingt-et-Un when it first debuted at the casinos of the French Riviera in the early 1700s. Vingt-et-Un means “twenty one” and the deceptively simple game was promoted as a fun-filled activity that combined luck and skill for players attempting to build a hand of 21 points without exceeding that value and without having a value less than that of the dealer.

Some historians argue that the game dates back well before the Middle Ages to ancient Rome when Romans played a similar game with wooden blocks of different numerical values.

Regardless, it’s clear that, from the beginning, blackjack offered players a satisfying gaming experience that allowed them to combine the luck of the draw with some savvy gaming skills.

Blackjack Strategy evolved over time which gave players a mathematical blueprint of how to best play the game to their advantage.

Blackjack wasn’t a game for simpletons – it involved planning, an understanding of statistics and some shrewd guesses as to how the opposing players and dealer would proceed in any particular circumstance.

Over time, the casinos started to expand their blackjack offerings with variations that involved different odds and techniques. Slowly, the Game of 21, which had become a staple for neighborhood get-togethers and long nights for soldiers on guard duty, ranchers on the range and travelers riding the trains of the late 1800s, turned into a staple of the casino circuit.

Card Counting at the Blackjack Table

Over the years, a number of blackjack enthusiasts developed reputations for their blackjack skills and manipulations.

Many of these gamers are card counters who can increase their chances of scoring wins by keeping track of cards that have been played. Card counting establishes the degree to which the as-yet-undealt deck favors the player or the dealer mathematically by tracking the changing imbalance of large and small cards in a diminishing deck.

Casinos do their best to exclude card counters because, if successful, a card counter has an advantage of up to 1.5% over the casino. If the card counter can ascertain that the deck still has a lot of low cards, he can proceed – and bet – accordingly.

If it’s clear that the deck still has a lot of high cards (10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings and Aces) s/he knows that the deck favors the player. When the deck favors the player, the player knows to bet more and when the deck favors the house, s/he understands that it’s best to bet less.

Why is counting cards illegal?  Well, it actually isn't, b-u-t (and it's a big "but"), land-based casinos do their best to exclude card counters even though the practice isn’t expressly illegal under local, state or federal laws.  If the casino security team suspects players of a card-counting scheme, they will be politely (or less politely) removed from the casino.  Check out the movie '21' about the infamous MIT card-counting team.

The online casino has no such mechanism to monitor card counting so now, card counters can be found paying online whenever possible.

Popular Blackjack Variations

The online casino offers a wide range of blackjack variations. Two of the most popular are:

Super 21 Blackjack

Super 21 Blackjack is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. It differs from a classic jackpot game in that the player wins automatically if he is left holding a hand of six cards or more in which the total value of the cards does not exceed 20 – even if the dealer has a blackjack. Hands can be split up to 4 times, doubling-down is allowed and the player’s blackjack supersedes the dealer’s blackjack.

Pontoon Blackjack

You play Pontoon Blackjack with a standard 52-card deck. The “Pontoon” is a blackjack – 10+ card plus an ace. It’s obligatory to take a hit on any hand of 16 or less and it’s possible to take up to 5 cards altogether. Splitting is done only on Aces. The dealer wins on a tie and if the dealer has a five-card hand, the dealer wins (except if the player has a “pontoon.”

Enjoy a gaming adventure of fun, excitement and real money prizes while you play blackjack online at the online casino.
